In this video demonstration, a woman with a long history of treatment resistant depression reveals startling dream imagery from nightmares that have been recurring since childhood, always accompanied by a profound sense of dread. This exploration led to a revisiting of childhood trauma and working through of toxic guilt, a process that finally knitted together mysterious fragments of her dream life in an emotionally meaningful way. Her recorded remarks indicate that this therapeutic process led to a sense of closure and peace, along with internal shifts that affected all of her relationships, especially with herself.

Join the DEFT Training!

Participants will discover a DEFT approach that is shame-sensitive, compassion centered, attachment oriented, inter-subjective, relational psychodynamic, experiential, spiritually integrated, somatic and emotion-focused.

Video presentations and interactive lectures will teach how a therapeutic alliance is developed to engage in a mutual, moment-to-moment tracking of the client's internal process and to give attention to the quality of the therapeutic relationship. Shame-sensitive interventions that help transcend toxic forms of shame, anxiety, guilt, and defenses will be demonstrated and elucidated. This process enables the client to access and integrate unconscious affect and to free energies towards connection and self-realization. The program focuses on the development of discrete skills and also offers practices to help remove internal obstacles to the learning process.

This ongoing training program can be started at any point, with a 10-session commitment (see policy agreement for details). The DEFT Training serves both established therapists and enthusiastic interns who share an excitement for advanced learning. It is a requirement that all new participants have exposure to either the DEFT approach or a closely related approach through an approved seminar or event
